What would you do if your environment
began falling apart before your eyes?
Living with the changing face of the Alps - a documentary
The last three years have been the warmest on record in the European Alps - glaciers are receding at an alarming rate and mountains are crumbling. Can alpine communities adapt economies and livelihoods fast enough to keep pace with
this rapid change?
Mont Blanc towers
over the surrounding alpine valleys
and the impact of the changing climate on the mountains around the town of Chamonix is increasingly evident. Huge rockfalls are
a daily occurrence, with many mountain routes lost to melting permafrost. Lifts and mountain huts are becoming unsafe as the ground underneath them shifts their foundations. Discover the realities of this unstable landscape with a mountain community forced to make big changes in order to continue earning a living in a region at the forefront of the climate crisis.
“Will it be possible to climb this route in 20 years?”
We head into the mountains with mountain guide Jon Bracey and professional athlete Liv Sansoz to climb one of the classic Chamonix routes. Rapid changes are forcing mountain professionals to change how they live and work in the mountains on a daily basis. Hillary Gerardi and Luc Moreau, experts on glacial development and the local ecosystem, share insights into their work and what these changes may mean for the future.

We’re modifying everything and it’s very dangerous for life on earth”

What’s your impact?
Get informed and find out what causes the greatest impact in your area, or in your home. Do you know where your food and other purchases come from? Could you use more local or circular supply systems? What about your energy provider - could you change to cleaner energy?
Positive change.
Are you able to reduce the amount you travel? Or use more public transport? How about going on your next adventure much closer to home?
Eating less meat, using a search engine that plants trees, joining a community group… it all helps!
Cut down on waste!
We produce far more waste than
30 years ago - food waste, packaging, single use plastics, fast fashion. How about starting a compost heap or finding out if there’s a community compost in your area? Or holding a clothes swap with your friends?
